There are three different types of automatic pool cleaners. The right type of cleaner for your pool is based on how your pool was built, the size of your pool, and how much debris rests in your pool.
Pressure-side pool cleaner
A pressure-side pool cleaner is a great way to remove debris from the bottom of your pool and is specifically recommended for larger pools that get a lot of debris that are plumbed with a dedicated cleaner line. Be aware that a pressure side cleaner needs to run off of a booster pump which is a separate pump from your main filtration pump. The pump pushes water through the unit and collects the debris into a bag which needs to be removed and cleaned manually.
Suction-side pool cleaner
A suction-side pool cleaner is my go-to if a pool has a constant issue with fine dirt and sand. Ideally, a dedicated cleaner line is best to operate a suction side cleaner but will also work plugged into your skimmer line if that is all that your pool is equipped with. This unit vacuums water, dirt, and debris from the bottom of your pool and sends it to your pump pot basket and pool filter for easy cleaning and eliminating a bag to empty regularly.
Robotic pool cleaner
Robotic cleaners are great for pools that are not set up/built for pressure or suction-side cleaners or pools that don't get very much debris. There are two types of robotic cleaners, corded and battery. They have a compartment that holds dirt and debris and that needs to be cleaned regularly. In this compartment, you will have a bag for large debris and a fine silt screen for dirt and sand. These cleaners are not intended to be left in your pool 24/7 like pressure-side and suction-side cleaners are. You will need to run the robotic cleaner for a specific amount of time each day and then remove it from the pool for storage in a protected area.
All of the swimming pool cleaners detailed above are available for purchase at your local pool supply store. If you are in the upstate South Carolina area please call us at 864 790 0992 so that we can help you decide, purchase, and or install the cleaner that is best suited for your pool.
